One of the readers posted this rather humbling, and fairly accurate comment on the Sky News website, summing up the riots in a few sentences.
“The picture of the woman leaping for her life out of a blazing building would make for an ‘iconic’ poster to rival the Athena poster of war and destruction! How sad that we as a country have come to this. A once proud and free country that provided a refuge for the oppressed has become one in which it’s own citizens are run run down and killed in our streets and others burned out of their homes.
Who are to blame? I am, you are , they are WE ALL ARE, because we stood by and watched as piece by piece our values were stripped down by politically correct apologistic politicians, and we all went along with it. We stopped disciplining our children in our families and communities and we became more insular and more selfish. It was someone else’s problem, never ours.
We were cowards; unsupported by the Police or politicians,we were too afraid to take a stand. We hamstrung the Police and teachers and now we reap what we sowed. We must courageously re-engage with our communities and rebuild”
